    Especially at 40k each.

Even HD's entry-level bikes don't appeal to young riders.

That said, North American sales of the Japanese brands are all down, too.

Only bikes in relatively stable demand are BMW and Ducati.

Just read the article. The accompanying video has the same information with more commentary.

The roots of this go further back than I realized. Is it possible that this goes beyond a matter of generational divide? The Millenials who shun the bikes and their image may the children of the same people loathed Reagan. Aside from the fact that many are not willing to shell out that kind of money for the brand if they are able, there may be a bias with its origins in parental antipathy.

This has the makings of an interesting thread.

True, but he's wrapped himself in their culture.

Untangling it from politics for a second, US "millennials" seem to be generally less interested in cars and motorcycles (and internal combustion) than previous generations.

Trump: Democrats are crazy, corrupt and trying to steal elections.
John: You forgot ugly, lazy and disrespectful.
Trump: Shut up! Go fix me a KFC pot pie.
    John: What about you, Don?
    Trump: F*ck you!
John: No, Don. What about you?
    Trump: F*ck you!
John: NO, DON. WHAT ABOUT YOU?

Another reason Harley is struggling is market saturation + the reasons already brought up here.
Years ago, I saw an interview with Sonny Barger and he said then that before long, all the doctors and dentist would get tired of their bikes, and the actual bikers could pick up a low mileage ride for dirt cheap.
They don't have to go to a dealer to get a bike.
Heck, Harley probably made as much on merch and accessories than they did on the actual sale of motorcycles during the boom.

Uhhhh, does anybody want to buy a hardly-worn Harley leather jacket? Asking for a friend.

Worth remembering at this point in the thread that what Brando rode in 'The Wild One' was . . .

    a Triumph Thunderbird.

The saturation also plays a role as well. When you see HD merch being sold in damn near every dirty-floored convenience store and truck stop, it cheapens the brand. HD went for the quick cash with licensing deals and put their logo on everything, which was a long-run mistake for the brand as a whole.
