The Making of a President 1968 by Theodore White is probably your best bet. White was a liberal and seemed to be better sourced with Democrats. White did the Making of the President series from 1960 until 1972. The 1960 book was very good and won the Pulitzer.

I never read the 1964 book and found the 1972 book boring because Nixon was going to win. The Boys on the Bus written in 1972 written by Timothy Crouse about the press corps was fun when I read it. It has been a long time since I read it but I remember particulary enjoying the parts on Hunter Thompson.

And probably the most important book of the 1968 was the Selling of the President by Joe McGinnis. It talked about how the Republicans used modern marketing methods to sell Nixon.

I have not read these books but have read others by Jules Witcover and know him to be an excellent writer. One is 85 Days: the Last Campaign (about the RFK campaign) and the second is The Year the Dream Died: Revisiting 1968.

Third-degree murder charge is smart. They don’t have to prove intent.

Yeah, but Andy did blow town with better than $3 million (in 2020 dollars) of Warden Norton's money.
