Brees is a liked and respected guy and I think a lot of his NFL peers let his retrograde opinions slide because they respect him. Then he went over the line and they reacted accordingly. He promptly apologized. IMO he gets to do that.

Brees does not have the best judgment with these things.

He popped off in a similar awareness-lacking way years back when the team was punished for the bounties.

As Shannon Sharpe said, if a guy who grew up in locker rooms with black athletes from youth on through the NFL doesn't get it, there's not much hope of the message being understood.
