I'm surprised anyone still takes calls.

I forced all my coaches to go to email for score/stats reporting about five years ago. The days their being staffing to ensure things get covered (by increasing earlier deadlines) and phones are answered at the office are LONG gone.

Got a litte pushback from old-timers who didn't want to change, but it took no time for everyone to adapt, and I think most agree it's better than rambling on for two minutes as they look over their scorebook. I still have two volleyball coaches who for some reason insist on calling my cell and leaving voicemails instead of just typing a quick email (and volleyball stats are quick to type) in their phones.

I remember the days when this crusty wrestling coach insisted on calling - full varsity and JV results. Never put a roster on MaxPreps either. Those calls took up to 45 minutes. Ugh.

You took JV results. Yeah, no.

It was always dreadful years ago to get the track or swim calls.

As the old saw goes: What's worse than track? Field.

At my old major metro (a while after I left), a number of agate clerks got whacked for bookmaking in between taking scores. Always thought that was pretty darned cool.

Yep we took JV results. Middle school too. Still do. It gets names in the paper. At least it’s by email now. For sure those track and swimming results were dreadful. Even with email they’re rough.

It also helps identify the problem parents you're going to be dealing with all through the kid's high school career

I always felt the energy and lunacy of the newsroom somewhat made up for the lack of pay, especially for cub reporters. I can’t imagine being a fresh-faced cop reporter working out of my studio apartment instead of within shouting distance of the city ed in the bullpen and consoling distance of the copy ed in the break room.

Some of the best jokes I've ever heard were told in newsrooms. There's a lot to be said for that.

I'd rather cover council than a track meet. But the good track and field writers really had their shit together, and I always admired it.

That depends. The money saved will likely go straight to shareholders.

And a third, if I want to take them both home.

I could always take stuff from my own workstation, but I didn't want to cannibalize it in case I needed it. But since office soon will no longer be an option, I might as well. Home efficiency has exceeded my (admittedly low) expectations, even on a 13-year-old iMac running Yosemite (can't upgrade any higher than El Capitan on this machine).

When you started working from home did the company reduce IT support staff? Where I worked the IT staff always fought telecommuting off and I wondered if one reason was to preserve their jobs.
