    Strom Thurmond was a senator in this century. He only ran for president because a fellow Dem, Harry Truman (who was 18 years older than Thurmond) pushed for civil rights.

    After splitting for the GOP, he became a kingmaker, boosting the chances of Nixon and less famously, Reagan.

    In 1980, Strom heavily supported John Connally, who then got demolished by Reagan in SC. After that, Thurmond’s role as kingmaker reverted you naming crap after himself and cronies.

    I now know what a "portmanteau" is. Don't think it'll be easy to slip into casual conversation, however.
