Will COVID-19 be the needle that finally bursts the sports bubble?

That’s fine. It’s almost certainly going to happen anyway, in the hometowns of these athletes, because they are 18-to-22 years old and, if a season is cancelled, there is no incentive to behave properly.

I’m not sure we’ll get college sports. If we don’t, sports will be cut and jobs - by the thousands across athletic departments - will be lost. But I get the sense the national media is pretty committed to the cause of them not happening.

    It’s a safe assumption.

But this is also a very good point!

Three months removed we can make determinations about whose career has ended?

Yeah, most of the athletes are probably going to be fine following Covid, given enough time to fully recover and get back into shape. The problem is we don't know what the long term effects are going to be. We very well might see a few careers end. Will it be everyone who gets it? Oh hell no and no one is saying that. Could it be up to 10? Yeah, maybe. More then 10? Not impossible. People who get hit with symptoms really go through it and God help us if a superstar has a blood clot from this that does more than end a career.

These Athletes Had the Coronavirus. Will They Ever Be the Same?

Damn it Jim, I'm a sportswriter, not a doctor! So it doesn't feel like my place to say, "Shut it all down." But given the continually progressing science, it doesn't feel right to just plow ahead.

USA Today is tracking results from college campuses (and I know this link is outdated as I post it, because I read about positive tests locally.)

Iowa high school baseball and softball teams -- who started their usual summer seasons -- have had positive cases, resulting in teams in quarantine and seasons suspended.

    Maybe not.

Grigor Dimitrov, a Bulgarian three-time Grand Slam semifinalist, has tested positive for COVID-19. He had played in an event in Belgrade which had fans in attendance.

Anyone have a specific example of national sports media actively undermining the return of sports?

I keep hearing this is happening, but haven't yet seen it. Admittedly I don't read much sports journalism.

The leagues can start up and come back whenever they like, right? It's not contingent on the agreement of the media.

And frankly it's counter-intuitive that a business utterly dependent on games being played would argue against playing them.

Clay Travis, licensed virologist, has been crowing about Iowa high school baseball.

Every single thing I see from a baseball writer is a reminder that the players and owners are horrible for not saving the country with baseball when we need it most.

On a different note: if you're Trevor Lawrence, are you even thinking of playing this year?

It is still too early to say whether Clemson University will exist except as a virtual institution this fall, let alone whether Trevor Lawrence will play for it.
