There's a quick video on espn.com right now about Ken Griffey Jr. and his vow NEVER playing for the Yankees (can't copy a link). That's how subtle racism was wielded in the 70's. Never heard this while he was playing (maybe not paying attention) but I applaud him.

It also may not have been racism at all. The way Griffey Sr. has told those stories in the past, he thought that Billy Martin held a grudge against Griffey from when the Reds beat the Yankees in the '76 WS, so he always singled out Griffey's kids to be a dick toward. There is another story they have both told about how Martin sent someone out of the clubhouse to tell Griffey's kids to be quiet, when there were a bunch of other kids around who were making noise, too.

But Griffey is pointing to Steinbrenner on 3rd base, not Martin. So Nettles' kid gets to take grounders but Griffey's kid is told to leave and then left with the message "Always look over at 3rd base". You can justify it all you want as a misperception (was that a possibility? Maybe, but what was more likely?) but I'm still going to applaud Griffey for using his ultimate power, No Thanks Yankees.

Keep Teddy. Remove the sidekicks. Fill space around him with greenery.

Shocking that a team that waited eight years to integrate after another team in its same city integrated would have racist tendencies. Just shocking, I tell ya.

Martin was a piece of shit and it would be completely within character to be a dick to kids cause he didn’t like the father.

Ken Griffey Sr. Recalls Junior's Distaste For NY Yankees

“See, a lot of people blame George (Steinbrenner),” Griffey Sr. said. “But it wasn’t George. (It was) Billy Martin.”

Honest question - not being a dick - is the difference between statues and banning books that we don't want these statues appearing to be "exalted." I do think there should be a museum for all of these deposed statues - preferably with a full and complete context of their origin, inspiration and why they aren't in public anymore.

Second - while it seems that the coast to coast marches have pretty much run their course - has there been any meaningful change with regard to police brutality? Hell, people need to start marching on their legislatures and city halls. I've just seen this too many times - something happens, people get enraged and vent - and nothing really happens to change the thing people were upset about.
