Posted this in the "Running Racism" thread, but it might be worth its own.
Mississippi's legislature voted today to change the state flag. It'll now go to the governor to sign the bill, and he's already said that he will. The state house of representatives voted 91-23, and the state senate 37-14.

Now the SEC needs to threaten Georgia. No quicker way to get results.

Can’t. Would be viewed as an idle threat. No way they’re taking the footbawwwl title game out of Atlanta. Threatening to boycott Mississippi, which hadn’t hosted a major tournament in any of the four big sports in 25 years, was like a Trumpist Senator threatening to vote no on a Democratic president’s SCOTUS nominee.

FWIW, one of the state senators in charge of drafting the law is Briggs Hopson. His brother is Jay Hopson, the head football coach at Southern Miss. I don't think Briggs' position on changing the flag was based on the recent actions of the NCAA, SEC and Conference USA, but I do wonder if Jay was putting an elbow in his ribs over the past week or so.

They have New Orleans. They have Houston or Dallas with A&M. They have two NFL stadiums in Florida plus the stadium in Orlando. They have an NFL stadium in Nashville. Atlanta could be dispensed with, no problem.

So apparently the way this will work:
    • Governor signs the bill (probably Monday or Tuesday; he has five days to sign it, so I'm sure they'll make it a big to-do)
    • Once the governor signs the bill into law, the old flag comes down immediately
    • A 9-person commission will design a new flag by September. It must contain the words "In God we trust" and must not have the Confederate emblem on it
    • The new design will go up for a vote in the November election
    • If the new design gets a majority, it becomes the state flag
    • If the new design does not get a majority, then they'll come up with a new design and vote again at some point
    • There won't be a state flag until one is approved. I guess it'll just be a plain background with the words "Mississippi state flag" on it in the interim

The In God We Trust mandate is odious but brilliant.

It came up in the debate whether people would take offense at that or not, and whether it might cause an issue. One of the senators (a black man) noted that it was on money, and people didn't have a problem keeping it in their pocket or spending it.
Apparently there's another state flag that has "In God We Trust" on it as well.

Ceremony should include Elijah Moore with actual urinating.

Now when are they going to address the phrase/name Ole Miss?

Good arguments on both counts. I’m not a fan of it being on currency, but if it is, it’s hard to claim it can’t be on a flag.
    The Senator is right.

Can you explain for those who don’t want to Google those particular terms?
