That second part applies to editors and reporters as well.

See maxims 2 and 3, and then my personal favorite, the second phrasing of #37.

The Seventy Maxims of Maximally Effective Mercenaries

There are twenty years of the Schlock Mercenary webcomic online, which these are lifted from. It's well worth the time.

Throw this one in too: "48. If it ain't broke, it hasn't been issued to the infantry."

I'm sure it is, but it's also apparently a club sport. They go out in the woods and have some sort of competition. I guess the team that makes it back without getting eaten by a bear or killed by the Blair Witch is the winner.

They get a map, a compass, and a list of checkpoint locations. The team which takes the least time to complete the course wins. This sounds much easier than it actually is.

If you're off by even one degree, you're fucked.

I read Schlock Mercenary, and I have found many applications of the Maxims in real life — including the 32nd (old-school VW Beetles float, y’all, and once upon a time that kept me out of severe trouble).

I think that for a non-revenue sport it is hard to be competitive unless you sink a lot of money into it, which is further incentive to drop the sport. I went to Boulder from 75-79 and the golf team featured a future U.S. Open winner, Steve Jones. The long-time golf coach was part time. He also ran a local real estate business and was a state legislator. I checked the website and now there are two coaches and an operations person. And CU is never going to be able to out recruit the California and Arizona schools because of the weather.

I find it amazing and inspiring that Howard Tayler has produced a daily script and comic for twenty years without missing a day. Not one. He's a helluva nice guy in person as well.

Howard is the inspiration for Tyler Vernon, the lead character in John Ringo's Troy Rising series of military SF books, starting with "Live Free or Die". If you like Schlock you should pick that one up, it hits many of the same points and is original as hell. Ringo thinks big. His pandemic book, "The Last Centurion" is on point, and his treatment of a pandemic in the modern U.S. will scare the shit out of you. It's been out for maybe ten years, so it's not Covid related - but the pandemic part of it is far more severe that what we're currently enduring and is truly frightening.

I follow a couple of volleyball groups in Facebook. There are already fundraising posts for Stanford volleyball. It's like GoFundMe, but more localized. Volleyball is a pretty tight community. I think the sport will survive.

As of last year, it’s actually 19 now. But it’s the best 15, plus the required 4 (m/w bb, baseball, w. vb). They’ll still win it, but the gap could close.

Upon closer inspection, men’s volleyball and women’s field hockey weren’t delivering many points, so maybe it’s all moot as you say.

I’m just here keeping tabs because my alma mater with just 20 sports somehow has become a perennial Top 10 contender.

Would love to know if anybody asked whether the school would give this a chance.
