Mel Brooks made at least four films that are light years better than anything John Hughes ever did.

A better comp for Hughes would be Judd Apatow. Funny movies with a "heart."
Remember how shocked I was when major characters admitted they hated their dad, they were widows, tried to kill themselves, raped a girl without her consent, tortured a dog with a car - yup these are comedies.

 

The Producers, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein and High Anxiety are all far better than anything on that list. The only one that comes close to me is Vacation and Hughes didn't even direct that.

 

Are there girls who actually consent to rape?

 

Well no - Caroline was too far gone to consent to Ted. Throw in that Jake tossed her like chattel toward Ted - pretty slimy.

I look back at a lot of Oliver Stone and it's so over the top it's hard to take any of it seriously. What was regarded as 'intensity' at the time now reads like very loud caricature. Nearly camp.

Compare 'Platoon' to 'Apocalypse Now,' for example.

I wonder if the same will hold for Tarantino over time. And Aronofsky.

Does any of it sustain beyond the moment of its making?

 

Wall Street is still eminently watchable. So is JFK, even though it’s bullshit. Natural Born Killers was supposed to feel cartoonish.

 

Camp is super watchable, and deeply enjoyable on that basis.

What changes over time, I think, is how seriously 'Wall Street' was taken when it arrived versus how it watches now.

It's one memorable line in a catalog of mousse, shoulder pads and suspenders.
