    The 1968 campaign might have been different if RFK hadn’t been killed in June. There was still plenty of in-fighting, but that made it worse.

    It's not that unique, even within living memory? Ted Kennedy ran against Carter in the 1980 primaries. Same with Reagan-Ford in 1976. Then you had George Wallace in 1968, and Henry Wallace in 1948. The Dixiecrats the same year.

    A lot of these were individual pols, of course, but they wouldn't have run or defected to run if they didn't have people behind them.
