It's an odd thing, even for these dim people and after all of this nonsense, to doom themselves over schools opening.

Why exactly must we restart schools anyway? I mean, will we lose a generation of learning if we simply say, “everything everywhere is too risky. We’re hitting pause on all educational activities until at least June 2021 or until infection rates drop greatly or a vaccine is developed.”
I ask this in all seriousness.

This is one I've been asking about for a while. I've had my temperature taken going a few places and I just laugh. There are plenty of adults who don't have a fever when they have COVID, too. It is even more ridiculous to think temperature checks will have any real value for reopening schools.

I understand. It just seemed too ideal (despite the inelegant name).

Trusting subject experts or trusting the guy with the orange haystack on his head? I know my choice.

Temperature checks are still useful, just not a complete guarantee.

Agreed. But is there any chance they realize they're playing their last chips before going completely bust?

Dean of local college reopening in-person classes telling students she fully expects to shut down again in October.

You've fundamentally misread that GaTech setup (which, by the way, is well done). It merely reports the probability someone in the gathering has it. Not the same thing as being exposed to it, and definitely worlds removed from being infected. Even in today's hottest of hot spots, Rt is not much higher than 1. That doesn't mean every encounter with an active infection results in another infection. It means that, on average, every active infection will over the lifespan of the infection lead to another infection.

Your kid isn't going to encounter 150 different people in his/her classes on Monday and then a completely fresh set of 150 people in class on Tuesday. He/she is going to encounter essentially the same people day in and day out (and school policies can be put in place to ensure this).

By the picture you're painting, your child could be placed in classrooms of only two students, kept completely isolated during class changes ... and by the end of the second or third week he or she would almost certainly be infected. Come on ... think this through.

To "reopen schools" is not without its risks, but wildly overstating them isn't productive in the least.
