Woody Allen was a shit actor, ok director, great writer. Eastwood is a better director than he was an actor, Redford is still a better actor than a director. You have a lot of actors who have been almost quasi-directors in terms of shaping a project. Kevin Costner for one. Hanks did a great job for That Thing You Do!, but I imagine he realized a directing gig is pretty much a full-time thing for three years in terms of developing, shooting and post and he turned to producing to hit all the projects he wanted to take on.

I loved that movie. As a kid.

I have no desire to build a house from old tires.

Isn't that like saying Magic or Bird?

That has an answer and it's Magic.

    Francis or Sofia?

In all seriousness, Scorsese is hard to place. (Other than behind Spielberg, Welles and Kubrick for sure, among Americans.)

Coppola had a great run in the 70s -but Scorcese seals it with Hugo and his docs. Not for nothing, though - Coppola did win three writing Oscars (including Patton).

Not an actor per se, but in the performer/director category you have to include Mike Nichols.

    And Mel Brooks.

Has any director ever sustained a run of movies as good as Godfather, the Conversation, Godfather II and Apocalypse Now?

Maybe Fellini or Preston Sturges. Kubrick. Altman?
