Bob Fosse had a hell of a run with an Oscar (Cabaret), Emmy (Liza with a Z special) and Tony (Pippin) all in the same year and all for directing. He also picked up a Tony and an Emmy for choreography.

The Coens are phenomenal in many ways - their writing, directing and editing really brings a fullness to their output. Shoot if your rep is so strong you can get Bill Murray to (mistakenly) agree to appear in a movie about Garfield the Cat - you've got something.

That's pretty good, but alternating good movie / bad movie is a commonplace even among great directors. Altman, for example. Peckinpah.

I think Swingline was looking for a streak of great movies uninterrupted by the routine flops and misfires.
