How many of them were wearing their masks properly, with both their mouths and their noses covered?

Yet again, that pulls the focus from where it matters.

Our perception of him is not more important than our reality. Our reality is far worse than it should be right now and that is his doing. Maybe the difference isn't quite that large of a number of deaths, but it is significant, and blame for that falls on his mistakes and his inaction.

My takeaway is not that Americans are stroppy individualists who won't be told what to do in any century, but that Americans in 2020 don't know any more about science or medicine or viruses than Americans in 1918.

    Which is kind of heartbreaking.

Perhaps. If everyone in that area is responding that way, and doing what has been drummed into us, it will help. OTOH, as long as there are others around who are not, and others far away who are not who travel, then that help is diluted.

This is in Missouri last weekend.

The dispersal is the key thing here. Massive national tourist attractions have no disincentive to stop because the local jurisdiction accounts for a tiny % of the attendance. The Sturgis area case count won't change much, which gives organizers cover.

Gwen worked there before we moved to the mountains, so she's been watching this situation very closely. When Kemp issued the whole "gotta go back to the school" order, they set a target date for physically opening the schools, only to walk that back within 24 hours. Then they announced a date for virtual learning with gradual re-opening. Now, according to that story, they're waffling again.

When you're trying to serve two masters (the families and their children entrusted to you and a Trump toadie), you wind up doing neither any justice.

New virus. Lots of unknowns. No vaccine. Recommendations keep changing. You can get it from an elevator button? Oh, no, you probably can't. Is it a respiratory disease? A blood disease? A problem for even the best scientists, let alone Joe Six Pack.
