Not in February, you didn't. And that was the discussion. Taking emergency action that inconveniences everyone (and bankrupts some) before the danger arrives. Getting humans to do that is, uh, not easy.

If there are nations that shut down before a single coronavirus case was reported on their shores . . . I'm all ears.

Contact tracing, we are discovering, is hard when people are unwilling to give up the names of those with whom they have had contact. The desire to avoid being accused of "snitching" is understandable in general, but we're talking about a health emergency here.

Not zero, but New Zealand locked down with about 100 cases

Given its size, that's like the US shutting down with 68,000 cases.

On March 12, when sports leagues began shutting down, we were at 1,300 cases. We hit 68,000 around March 28, and had already shut down in most states.

    6,800 not 68,000

EDIT: We topped 7,000 on March 17 so that's everything from Maine to Hawaii closing. The Bay Area closed March 16 and California as a state followed about a week later. So basically the whole country closed except for essential business when the Bay Area did.

"Shut down" is overstating it, but I was in South Carolina from 3/11 to 3/16 and back in Texas from then on, and in neither place was it (nor has it been since) within the faintest realm of business-as-usual.

We will reach herd immunity before a vaccine is available. "Operation Warp Speed" will hit the Romulan Neutral Zone the second Trump takes the gas in November, on purpose.

My guess is that COVID will infect people a second and third time before then but won't be nearly as severe for repeat patients as long as the next dose is over months.

The ballyhooed fall "second wave" will simply be an extension of the first wave over virgin Midwest territory. This disease has shown no signs whatsoever of seasonality. Look at 110º fucking Arizona.

The silver lining to this is the 2020-2021 flu season will be the lightest ever because of the COVID measures.

There's a reason why they call the fall and winter "cough and cold season". Coughing Covid around seems to me to be a no-brainer setup for a legit second wave similar to 1918.

You keep trying to narrow this to shut downs to make it fit your ridiculous, contrarian narrative. Not everything that was suggested had to happen at the same time for things to be much better than they are now.

Again, here are Spartan Squad's suggestions. Most of this could have and should have been done in February, if not January, not to mention setting up a federal testing and contact tracing program, a vital step President Trump still refuses to take five months after most of the country shut down.
