Well, they had those two on the team the year before, and the Angels went 93-69 and won the division. We won't talk about the ensuing ALCS.

Of course, in 1983, they lost Baylor to the Yankees and Reggie had probably his worst season ever, so there's that.

I brought that theory up before when I posted about Roberto Osuna's elbow injury, but it was partially drowned out in the hatred of the Astros in general and Osuna in particular.

That said, Alvarez was having trouble with the knee during spring training in March, long before he contracted COVID. It seems to me as if the medical staff really blew it on this one.

Alvarez is officially done for the season. He is having season-ending surgery to repair a partial tear of the patella tendon in his right knee.

Astros' Alvarez to have surgery, out for season

Sure they lost Baylor but his numbers were more than accounted for in '83 and then some.

He had 24 homers and 93 RBIs in '82 but the non-starters combined for just 12 homers and 75 RBIs.

In '83 Ellis Valentine replaces Baylor (lol) and had 13 homers and 43 RBIs in 86 games and the non-starters combined for 40 homers and 211 RBIs.

Added together 53 homers and 254 RBIs in place of Baylor's 24/93.

Sure you can say Baylor and Jackson were the '82 Angels version of Canseco and McGwire and losing one of them the next year blows that dynamic -- and the team dynamic -- to smithereens. I accept that. But the Angels replaced Baylor's numbers and then some.

And Foli and Boone were the exact same OPS hitters in '82 and '83.

    Now we're done here.

Chef can correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure his “we’re done here” was for events happening today on the field, and not related to the Angels discussion.

Was he talking about Kansas City? City's been hiding its light under a bushel basket if so.

I imagine he was not speaking about KC.
