You're about 20 years off. "Colored" was very much in vogue in the early 1960s.

Heck, the movie "Hidden Figures" was filled with "colored" references.

The career arc of Gary Thorne is an odd one ... in a dim age of broadcasting, he has the talent to be a bigger star than he even was briefly at ESPN.

And I agree he is one of the greats.

That is great. Thorne had been in contentious contract talks with the Orioles for months. He just agreed to some sort of very limited deal for whatever remains in this silly season. But based on the justifiably rave reviews that the new (as in this week) new guy is getting, I don't think Thorne will be to Baltimore what Brennaman is to Cincy. Thorne is great. I love his work. I'll be happy if he returns. But I suspect he has been Pipped.

If we want to return to crappy longtime broadcasters in large markets I nominate Charley Steiner. He’s a fun listen on Dodger radio for everything but play-by-play. His eyesight is bad so his home run and fly ball calls are awful and he often calls the wrong player and inning.

He’s working from home this season and his timing is off. I often hear the crack of the bat before he calls the pitch.

I just think Thorne needs to go back to hockey and bigtime hockey games, where he is an electric force.

I think my favorite Thorne call came in Game 4 of the 1996 Cup finals between the Avs (one year removed from being the Nordiques) and the Panthers. "It didn't go in the net ... how did it not go in the net?"

Everything Thorne has done is a distant second to this.

I remember watching at about 10:00 Eastern. I think, anyway.
