This is what kills me. The university presidents pull the plug and leave the commissioner to take all the bullets while their ADs pull this shit. It's cowardice on an amazing level.

This is a decision for academics, not jocks. It's one for epidemiologists, not trainers. But the reason the story matters is that the head jock at Nebraska is participating simply to humiliate the commissioner. He's hoping to mark his territory and begin a process of making things so miserable for Warren that he quits.

All this is true, but young people always have that sense of immortality. Why would it change now?

Of course the ADs wanted to play ... they are sports people, not epidemiologists. Fuck the ADs.

And they need the money to keep the departments afloat.

I was hoping they’d change because they’d realize the virus doesn’t have to kill them or anyone else in order to shut down the school.

Think of the incoming freshmen/women. They were cheated of their senior years in high school. No prom. No graduation. No parties. Few if any summer jobs. Cooped up in their parents' homes for months. Now they escape. It's amazing to me ANY of them abide by the social distancing and masking guidelines. Asking 18-19 year olds to be more mature than a significant minority of American adults including the President are willing to be is asking one hell of a lot. From a planning standpoint, it's simply nuts. Don't go out and try to get laid, Jimmy or Jane. Stay locked in your dorm room so on Saturday you can see us play Iowa St. on TV instead. Yeah, sure.

Because they are not actually immortal?

It won't of course, because a sophomore in college is looking to get laid.

This “fuck them” or “they can fuck off” vibe I get these days is very authoritarian.

I have two college students — one a second-year student and the other a fourth-year student — and the attitude they and most of their friends have is, if we wanted to stay locked up and socially isolate ourselves, we would have stayed home and lived rent-free, with Mom and Dad.

If they're on campus, they're going to be college students, and take their chances with the virus. I might not agree with that philosophy, but I certainly can't say I blame them for thinking that way.

Yes, I have such immense power that my exasperated denouncement should be seen as an iron fist holding a mighty cudgel.
