It's $15 million for the winner now, plus millions for the next several guys, all the way down to $70,000 for 126th through 150th -- and those guys didn't even qualify for the first event!

And let's not forget that the Tour whacked a bunch of employees just a few weeks ago.

You were in the same media center I was that day. Guys were complaining Tiger or Phil didn't step up, especially since the previous major champions that year had been, in their opinion, boring schlubs (Weir, Furyk, Curtis).
That was one of the storylines that week: "can Tiger or Phil save the golf season by winning a major?"

The Tour isn't supposed to have a large or high-salaried staff (except for the commish and 7-8 of the top people). Plus, the PGA Tour commissioner is paid much lower than the major team sports commissioners.
It's money in and money out, to the players in the form of purses. The Tour staff's job is to set up playing opportunities for the players. And from my understanding of how it's supposed to work, any reduction of purses, by contract, is supposed to go back to the title sponsors.

I'm aware of the Tour's primary job being to provide player opportunities and that cutting purses wouldn't be a last resort in a crisis because it wouldn't even be on the list. I'm just annoyed that they recently let go some people that I used to work for and with, several who had offices within a driver/3-wood of the golf course with $450 greens fees (and yes, I know that's a different bucket too). Yet when I watch the tournaments the next two weeks, it will be a celebration of cash.

But you don't seem to understand. It's the way a 501 (c)(6) trade organization works, which is the legal definition of the PGA Tour.

I think he understands it, but also knows he doesn’t have to like it either.

I am not disputing what you say at all. It's the worst worst worst element of golf media, the obsessive fluffing of whoever's on top at the expense of just letting it happen. I mean, thinking the first Canadian to win a major is boring, or a 1000-1 shot like Curtis winning the Open is boring, indicates you've lost touch with the whole ideas of both sports and journalism (root word of news is "new") simultaneously.

I'm aware of the legal definition. Can you explain birdies and bogeys one more time?

Shaun became one of my better sources on the Tour when he was out there and we had a lot of conversations about this. Without being whiny about it, he doesn't believe he's ever gotten his full due for winning that tournament.

Just one week to go before I can shave my FedEx Cup Playoffs beard!

It's not @Elliotte Friedman level yet but I got another week to go.

Is the USGA jealous of what's happening at Olympia Fields this week? When they had the Open there, players tore it up. Of course, it had been cool and damp leading up to the Open, not hot and dry. Only Mother Nature can keep these guys from breaking par.

I don't like paying taxes, but it's legally what I have to do. Same thing applies here.
