So the kid was there as part of a group, right? Was he separated from them when he killed the first person? If so, why and how did that happen? If not, why didn’t they detain him or support him so he wasn’t running from people who saw the first killing?

From what I've seen, the kid was part of a group that was watching over a small area, trying to keep stuff from burning down (they claimed they stopped protestors from burning a church earlier in the night) and providing first aid. The kid was being interviewed on camera when he left with another guy to go answer a first aid call. The reporter followed along. While they were walking, that's when Red Shirt sparked the confrontation that led to the first shooting.
Rittenhouse was kneeling next to Red Shirt and called someone (I haven't seen it reported who, whether it was 911 or someone else). The reporter was also close enough to give a very vivid eyewitness account, both to police and in later radio interviews. While that was going on, the mob that heard the shots started gathering, saw him with the gun, and started pointing him out. That was when he started running.

So it's hard to fully condemn the mob, which was trying to detain an active shooter.
It's also easy to stitch together a very strong and credible self-defense claim for Rittenhouse in all three shootings.
It's a bad situation all around. None of the people involved, except maybe the first guy who was trying to pick a fight, is entirely blameless nor are they entirely to blame. But for obvious reasons nobody really seems to want to dissect it that finely.

Nothing says social justice like an imperious looking white man walking 10 steps ahead of a group of young black men.

    That's a very good point.

    It's a fluid situation.

who was the person he left with? And if he was the one starting the fight, why did the kid shoot instead of him?

Rittenhouse (the kid) left with someone else from their group, an older man. I don't know what happened to him. Just before the first shot was fired, Rittenhouse was being chased and someone threw what might have been a Molotov Cocktail in his direction, so it's possible they got separated in the chaos or went in different directions at some point.
Rosenbaum (the guy who got shot) was the one picking the fight. He popped up several times earlier in the night and berated Rittenhouse and the others. He approached Rittenhouse again, quickly and in a group, and that's when things got squirrely.
    There's a good recap here.

Rittenhouse charged with multiple counts of homicide

Also, here's the Twitter feed for the Daily Caller reporter, Richie McGinniss, who was walking with Rittenhouse when all of this went down. He's got quite the collection of riot porn on his timeline. As an eyewitness, McGinniss is mentioned prominently in the criminal complaint against Rittenhouse.

A well-regulated militia wouldn’t let an underage member get separated from the group.
