I remember about 10 years ago there was a big movement to have all high school football players get EKGs as part of their pre-practice physicals. Several kids died during spring and fall practices around the country. Autopsies revealed heart issues. Happened to a kid during spring practice at my daughter's high school around then.

I think I read that a number of universities have gotten baseline cardiac exams on their players in order to have a comparison available. I can't call names on schools or conferences and haven't googled it.

It would be a smart move, both out of concern for the player's health and as CYA.

Fun Mandel story: about a decade ago, my brother lived in a fairly nice apartment complex in Atlanta. The apartment next door was seemingly vacant, but also seemingly not available for rent. One day, several large boxes were being delivered to the next-door apartment by UPS when my brother walked up. He tried to tell the delivery guy that nobody lived there, but the guy left the boxes anyway. Curious, my brother saw that all of the boxes were addressed to Stewart Mandel, Sports Illustrated. The boxes were gone the next day. My brother never did see Mandel in the flesh. All we can figure is that he was in and out of Atlanta so often during college football season that he just kept an apartment rather than staying in hotels.
I'm sure SI doesn't pay for THAT anymore...

That's intriguing. My former boss is still in touch with all of his co-workers from the CNN/SI glory days, back when there was still a chance of going head to head with ESPN. He'd know more.

I think it falls under the "don't want to know" category for most colleges, which is why it seems like a player or two finds out during the NFL Draft process each year and essentially decides to retire.

It used to. In the time of Covid, it might be a very smart investment for a school to make. It shows they care, catches any unknown existing conditions and avoids that blame, and provides a baseline to compare to if they do have a case.
