I’ve eaten at Rick Bayless’ restaurant in Chicago and that was pretty damn good.

I grew up in SoCal so I know my Mexican food, including in my hometown. And I scoff at getting any Mexican food east of, say, the Kansas border. I haven't been in Texas enough to sample.

Sazon in Santa Fe is tremendous.

El Taco De Mexico in Denver looks like a total crap hole. So damn good. (And a James Beard Foundation winner.)

There is amazing and authentic Mexican food all over, often in a small space next to a gas station. If the lunchtime clientele is largely Hispanic, odds are the food is really good.

Saw a funny post on FB. Photo of a newspaper ad that said: Voted best tacos in town — Taco Bell.
And below that it said: See what happens when you don’t vote.

When I lived in a different part of town we used to frequent a Mexican restaurant that was in a gas station. It was in a corner of the mini-mart at the Chevron. Food was tremendous.

The place I loved went downhill hard in the last 20 years. Gone now, but back then, so good.

Del Taco is good. Have you had the bean burrito?

Some of the best fries I ever had were at a Del Taco in SoCal.

Taqueria Juanito's in Tucson. Small, no-frills place with the kitchen right behind the cashier. Incredible food.

When I reviewed restaurants for the local daily, I stumbled across a small Mexican restaurant that was attached to an auto body shop. There was a grill in the parking lot next to cars being worked on. I'm sure there were a bunch of health code violations, but the food was damn good.
