You can do due diligence and a pick doesn’t work out..

Back in the day (1990, to be exact), the Rams drafted a guy who was actualy in prison at the time. John Robinson called the kid to congratulate him for being drafted and the number turned out to be the Arizona State Prison.

Epilogue: The player, RB David Lang, missed the '90 season but reported in 1991 and made the team. Wound up playing five NFL seasons, mostly on special teams, four with the Rams and one with the Cowboys. Won a Super Bowl ring.

Not doing due diligence worked out well for the 1989 Cleveland Indians too.

"We didn't see anything in his background."

Meanwhile, at least two teams had major red flags on him. Maybe hire better people, Dave.

WIKI: Lang founded the nonprofit organization "Legends by Lang" to mentor urban youths. He was shot and killed on May 21, 2005. He had a son named Dvae, whose name is constantly mistaken for a typo.

I got Mahomes with my Mr. Irrelevent pick the year he broke out, and only used him in about a third of the games because I spent an early pick on Drew Brees.
This year I waited until the eighth round to get a QB and then got Brees and Rodgers in back-to-back rounds.
I don't mind going for a stud QB early because they're still going to be your highest-scoring player, after all, and it's always good to get a top guy you know is going to start all 16 games. There's comfort in the set-it-and-forget-it player at that position. But they have definitely been de-emphasized in recent years. Brees and Rodgers were consensus top 20 picks a year or two ago. This year, I think the first QB didn't go off the board until Round 3. By the time the real run started in Round 8, only three had been taken (Lamar Jackson, Dak Prescott and Mahomes).

Prescott? One of those things is not like the other. I mean, he's OK, but...

Dude actually took him one pick ahead of Mahomes. Said he figures he's trying to get paid and will ball out.
Whatever works for you, I guess.

Back around 1993, the Rough Riders picked a player from the Vegas dispersal draft who was dead.

A year or two later the Alouettes picked a dead guy in the entry draft.
