    There is not a period I can recall when the men's top players didn't have to deal with a deep and competitive field.

    Some of the names (Kuerten, Rios, Korda, Stich, Nalbandian, etc.) just may not have been household to a lot of Americans

    Seles won the Australian Open after being stabbed. So when we talk about overcoming obstacles to win, Seles is at the top of the list. Followed by Martina who overcame so much hatred and dispisement, first for being From a communist country during the Cold War when that meant a lot, being a rival and beating Chrissy. Then defecting, weight issues, sexuality discrimination. Billy Jean for everything and she still not only won but made a seismic difference for women athletes everywhere in every sport all while being hounded for her sexuality, politics and personal life. And none of them Repeatedly threatened harm to officials, faked injuries, refused to be magnanimous, civil and extend sportsmanship in a sport that was once governed by such outward behaviors.

    it’s impossible to deny Serena Williams’ greatness as it’s equally impossible to deny her hubris and selfishness.

    I appreciate the difficulty to get to where these guys go, relative to the human population, they were phenomenal tennis players. But in my lifetime,

    the 70's had Connors/Ashe/Vilas/Borg/Nastase/Vitas competing against each other;
    80's had Borg/McEnroe/Connors then Becker/Lendl/Edberg/Wilander
    90's had Sampras/Agassi/Courier/Rafter

    Then in the 2000s its just not the same depth. The only holder of multiple majors in the 2000s besides Fed is Hewitt with 2. That's it.

    Seles' stabbing is one of the biggest impacts to tennis history. Before, she was unbelievable, she took everything early and hit ropes, which completely befuddled Steffi and put Steffi clearly behind Monica at #2. Unfortunately, post-stabbing Seles was never the same. Monica won 3 majors each in 1991 & 1992 (Steffi won Wimbledon both years).

    Nice match going on. Busta v Zverev Nice comeback so far

    120+mph 2nd serve in the 6th game of the 5th set of semi-final. That just amazes me

    Seles wasn’t popular. I’ve always felt like her history is generally overlooked in many ways - her dominance, the attack, the comeback. She never seemed to get the respect and sympathy she deserved.

    Interviewed her at Sydney 2000, when she was third of the US Dream Team behind the Williams sisters. So friendly, didn't seem at all embittered by the very tough break life dealt her. Genuinely cheerful and optimistic. I was impressed, oh, hell, charmed, to say the least.

    Medvedev is not sharp. He's usually dead on with the drop shot, but he's come up short on several of them tonight.

    You limited Sampras and Agassi to the 90s. Each won 2 majors in the 2000s. Kuerten won 2 majors in the 2000s. Nadal won multiple majors in the 2000s.

    And yeah, not many others did. . . . because Fed won a boatload. Don't use his dominance as an indictment of his competition. That's like saying the Celtics had no competition because only one other team won a title in the 1960s.
