State has backtracked from its obviously overblown 500,000 figure.

The Oregonian had a tongue-clucking look at how outrageous the figure was; my question was, did The O immediately recognize the 500,000 as overblown - and resist printing that figure - or did it need to sleep on it for a night?

Oregon initially said 500,000 people had been evacuated because of wildfires. The numbers didn’t add up -- and the state backtracked.

Well thank God. And honestly having to move basically the size of Sacramento did sound a little weird.

Good for the Oregonian to fact-check that crap.

Though I'm not a fan of "a newsroom analysis" in their story. Just report the damn story and don't insert yourself.

I grew up with fires in SoCal. That was a ridiculous number.

So an update from Oregon, the haze in the skies puts us in a "perpetual dusk" (great album title). You can drink whenever, you can sleep whenever, work whenever. The calendar is meaningless due to COVID, the clock is meaningless due to the lack of sun (or moon). It's truly terrible. Much of the Cascades from Eugene north to the Columbia River is gone, toast. We're hoping a shift in the wind might turn the fire(s) back on itself and there is rain forecast for next week. But there are still fires burning in the south part of the state, and in Washington. It's as bad as I've seen it in 25 years living here. Throw Covid into the mix and we're in the dumps. I'm guessing the Portland BLM protestors have taken a few nights off - but this state has been through the ringer.

and people need to understand what is happening out this way - if the entire state of New Jersey was on fire, it still wouldn't equal the amount of fire out west.

All of the biggest threats to America are unfolding before our eyes

    A screaming, spreading wake-up call

All the biggest threats to America — most of them predicted, if not known well in advance — are unfolding before our eyes, in real-time, in unmistakable ways.

Why it matters: It's as if God or the galaxy, or whatever you believe in, are screaming for politicians and the public to pop our bubbles and pay attention — believe our eyes.

Misinformation: Every day brings new stories of other nations manipulating social media — and Americans refusing to believe scientists or experts about factual news, coronavirus prevention, global warming, vaccines and established truth.

Sound awful in Oregon, especially around Lincoln City, Salem, Medford and points in between. Stay safe, DanO.

Smoke is getting worse in eastern Washington/North Idaho; we're above 150 on the air quality meter now and expected to peak in the 300s tomorrow or Monday. But at least the wildfires in our region are (relatively) under control.

My friend who lives in Lincoln City, evacuated to Aberdeen and was going to stay a couple more days. But his neighbor called him and said the power was restored and the evacuation orders lifted. He is going back today.

Looks like everything is gone but the ugly-ass bronze statue of a bear he had in front of his house.
