Central Oregon air quality index level is > 500.

The rating system doesn't go beyond 500.

Can't imagine how thick that must be.

In 2017, we were in the 300s for a few days here, and it was awful. You couldn't keep the smoke smell (or taste) out of your house even with the windows closed.

As somebody who was severely burned once, I can’t begin to describe how painful the recovery is from it. I wouldn’t wish being on fire to my worst enemy.

Not getting better. Our temps are down about 20 degrees from where they should be because the sun cannot penetrate the smoke - like nuclear winter. I can only imagine what it is doing to those crops still yet to be harvested.

Prices on items grown on the west coast and shipped east have skyrocketed this year, not only because of supply chain issues but because of the lingering drought and the crackdown on the people who harvest it. I can only imagine how much worse things will get this winter. There are items that can't be grown locally on a scale that makes money.

I've been off work all week, might not work again until Saturday. Don't know how y'all lasted a month or so when the lockdown was full on. I miss being "essential."

Not necessarily. Friend with a small vineyard inland from Santa Barbara got theirs' in mid-August, just before all this broke. It will vary by region, especially in Cali.
All of the ash & crap in the air will eventually settle on the soil around the vines and work as a sort of added fertiliser for next season's crop - if there is a next season.
