Second time this "season" the Angels gave up a walk-off grand slam.

And both have been in extra innings when one run would have sufficed. If their bullpen wasn't such an arson squad, they'd be in playoff position. They have blown 13 saves.

Last night was bottom of the ninth. True about the bullpen.

Is there an official count on the number of doubleheaders that have been played this season? And whether we're approaching any sort of record? It feels like there's at least one a day.

Here's a tally of doubleheaders so far. MLB Baseball Doubleheaders - Major League Baseball - ESPN They used to have scheduled doubleheaders back in the day so the 40 some-odd here probably isn't the record. I could be wrong and I'm going to look it up after I post but that's my gut.

1939 Yankees played 24 doubleheaders. Just chose it randomly to see. They played a few back to back doubleheaders. One week in June they played 2 on Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday. The Sunday twofer was in NY on Wednesday they played 2 in Philly and on Thursday they played 2 in DC.

Looks like the record for a single team is 44 in one season set by the 1943 White Sox. And the Braves one season played nine consecutive doubleheaders in the span of 12 days. That had to have been brutal.

That makes some sense for a team on the geographic fringes of the league, during war time. I knew they played more doubleheaders back in the day, but I didn't realize they were as frequent as that. I grew up in the 80s when teams would schedule one or two a season, and maybe wind up with a couple more because of rainouts. Figured that was more the norm, plus a few more scheduled doubleheaders, most of the time.

They also played a 9 inning game in 2 hours or less. Usually less.
