My youngest daughter's birthday. I'm sometimes slow to remember my wedding date but not this.

That and Spirit of Atlanta's "Let It Be Me" were the show-stoppers back in the day.

Got hooked on DCI with Blue Devils and Santa Clara Vanguard out west. Bridgemen, Crossmen, Madison Scouts, Phantom Regiment (the entire drum line attended UF), Velvet Knights (my personal favorites) were all amazing during that era.

I’m a fan of the Coats. An injury kept me from joining Crown back when they started up. Love me some DCI.

The Cavaliers' 2006 show "The Machine" is perhaps the most amazing DCI performance I can remember.

They kicked serious ass in the Ampersand War so they were just running up the score.

The poor brass section in my college pep band forced us to shelve this. Same section that the band director tried to play up to the nines and to show off to all could barely keep time. That tends to mean that getting off the beat isn't going to happen. You think for a moment that they could handle the intro to "In The Stone"? Took 15 minutes for the pep band director to realize that the brass section was in far over their heads.

Furthermore, I'm guessing that few - if any of them - had ever heard of EWF or "In The Stone." Their loss.

I have promised my daughter unspeakably stern punishment if she ever plays that so I can hear it.

It was a nice gesture for the USC band director to make Philip Bailey an honorary band member. But, IMO, how about adding Ralph Johnson and Verdine White - EWF's other longtime members - to the honorary member list. And one more posthumously for EWF founder Maurice White?
