From the Rangers, thrown in with Staal to get Detroit to take on the salary.

I thought you were suggesting that you Detroit can get ANOTHER draft pick by trading him.

You said in March. I am not sure if you were thinking @ the trade deadline (which is in February).

But this is the last year of Staal's deal and he has a n0-trade clause.

He should be on Detroit all year. ... then he either retires or he is a UFA.

I would think he’d waive it to go to a contender but yes, I am thinking the next trade deadline

Both Cooper and the Lightning GM Julien BriseBois have legal backgrounds. I think the GM was a tax lawyer and later went into sports/entertainment law before moving over to management.

At the 2021 deadline, with roughly only 15% of his salary payable, a healthy Marc Staal could easily bring back a pick/picks were he to be traded.

    Downside, sure. Not done.

    1) He has a no trade clause.
    2) Even if he were on board, having watched Marc Staal go downhill, I am really wondering for what team he'd be an upgrade to make a playoff push.

    He just got traded
Even Mike Green brought a fourth round pick

He just got traded to a rebuilding team with cap room that was willing to eat his salary if a high draft pick was thrown in.

Again, we were talking about a team trying for an upgrade at the deadline to make a playoff push.

I suppose it could happen, but having watched him night in and night out, I just don't see Marc Staal as that kind of "upgrade" player at this point, at least for most decent teams. And there is the no trade clause, on top of it.

The Rangers had to add a sweetener for the Wings to take him. Any team could have had him, he’s shown his value. I suppose things could change but he has less than 0 value at this point.

    Fine by me
Hope Wings do another deal like that

It’s smart, use your cap space to acquire picks or young payers.

If he’s healthy, there will be a team at the deadline that feels they could use him in their bottom pair, will have $1 million of cap room, and will take him off Detroit’s hands.
