If the 3, 24 and 43 can get back/stay on the track, so can the 45. IIRC NASCAR’s policy had been to let any team apply for an unclaimed number.

The only racing series that I'm aware of that has made a statement on retiring a number is IndyCar. No. 14 is to be retired when Foyt Enterprises no longer exists. But NASCAR's never made an official comment on the No. 21 or the No. 43, although I'd assume they would take a similar stand if the Woods or the Pettys close up shop. The No. 3 has been held by RCR since Dale's death because that was Richard's number. Same with the No. 24 at Hendrick.

Sounds like more of a case of teams not assigning numbers or keeping them out of circulation than an actual retirement. First example that comes to mind (excuse my bias) is the Warriors taking Durant's number out of the mix.

If I recall correctly, the Cincinnati Reds have not formally retired Pete Rose’s No. 14, but they don’t assign it.

Excellent analysis of the deal, and why didn’t anybody in the media do as well as David Ragan did?

Why, I have no idea, but I immediately thought of Prodigy, Dave Marcus and his wing tips.

I’m not saying Logano’s blocking like he’s trying to stave off elimination on “Hollywood Squares,” but

Unexpected. On the other hand, I was surprised when he didn’t marry a race car.

Is this Rick Hendrick choosing Chad Knaus to take over the business some day? You could do way worse.

Losing Chicago was expected. Losing Kentucky is a bit of a surprise.
