A no-trade clause does not automatically mean he will not be dealt. It usually means he will be consulted when Steve Yzerman wants to think about a move - Staal will have a sh_t list consisting of at least a handful of teams that he does not wish to dealt to to avoid being dumped to a bottom feeder.

At that point, the moment a contender offers a mid-round pick to take the balance of Marc Staal's deal, Yzerman cashes in again.

Until then, Staal will help show the kids how to be a good pro, and he'll help the Red Wings on the blue line.

Of course the no-trade doesn't mean he can't agree to waive it. He waived it to go to Detroit. And they ARE a bottom feeder.

Correct. And Yzerman will almost certainly consult with Marc Staal near the trade deadline, and make another deal to save the Ilitch family a little scratch on the back end and gain another draft pick. In the process, the Red Wings already gained a draft pick to take Staal's last season off the Blueshirts' books. In the meantime, Staal will teach some young players in Detroit how to be a pro and bolster the blue line.

Hey, @Cosmo and @Moderator1 . Per Elliotte Friedman, the Caps are interested in Henrik Lundqvist.

Well, they need a backup goalie. Will he play for very little money? Caps are cap squeezed.

He has $5.5 million coming from the Rangers. Figure, the market for him will be limited; if there were multiple teams interested maybe he could squeeze a little extra coin out of it. But at this point in his career and his life, he probably isn't thinking about the extra $100 or $200K he may be able to squeeze out of a deal, he is going to want the team that he thinks has the best chance at a cup. It's the one thing he didn't accomplish in his career. So if he thinks Washington is the place, I would bet that he will play for very little money.

The Caps still have plenty of talent. Need to shore up the D and hope Samsonov is legit. I think Laviolette will make them better, tougher. You know, like they were in 2018 when they had a legit coach. We'll see.

I'm not at all sold on Samsonov but no way they pay Holtby what someone is going to throw at him. Curious to see where he ends up and for how much.

Ovechkin, Backstrom, Eller, Wilson, Oshie, Carlson - they're solid and will give you what they have. Laviolette has to get Kuznetsov and Vrana to play hard every night.

And hope Samsonov is legit. Did I say that already? It is pretty key.

If they have any doubts about Samsonov, Lundqvist would actually be a good insurance policy. He can still play. He's not nearly what he was in 2011, but I believe he could still start for some teams. He could be a mentor, and they don't have to roll the dice with two young goalies and hope at least one works out. I could see how it would make sense if that is where Lundqvist wants to go.

I'd be good with the King coming to town, for the reasons already described. I'm semi-sold on Samsonov. Thought he had some brilliant stretches there last year but we have no idea what he looks like in the playoffs, so there's that.
