    Well, that’s gonna be awkward.

Ireland's Supreme Court has ruled that bread sold by the fast food chain Subway contains so much sugar that it cannot be legally defined as bread. The ruling came in a tax dispute brought by Bookfinders Ltd., an Irish Subway franchisee, which argued that some of its takeaway products - including teas, coffees and heated sandwiches - were not liable for value-added tax.

A panel of judges rejected the appeal Tuesday, ruling that the bread sold by Subway contains too much sugar to be categorized as a "staple food," which is not taxed.

"There is no dispute that the bread supplied by Subway in its heated sandwiches has a sugar content of 10% of the weight of the flour included in the dough, and thus exceeds the 2% specified," the judgment read.

The law makes a distinction between "bread as a staple food" and other baked goods "which are, or approach, confectionery or fancy baked goods," the judgement said.

always puzzled me when Subway would run ads praising their bread.

I can't think of a national sandwich chain with worse bread. Subway's is awful. Must be all that sugar.

Although the bread is A problem, it's not THE problem.
The problem is the rest of the shit that they put in there.

I had a friend once tell me you never wake up in the morning saying "I'm gonna eat at Subway today!"

It just sort of ... happens.

Kind of like McDonald's in that way.

If you're traveling, hungry and a McDonald's or Subway is your best option at an interstate exit, you eat there.

If you have other choices, you don't.

Subway bread isn't bad out of the oven. It's not great, but it's not bad. It just gets progressively worse quickly and when I worked at one, we used to still serve it up to 48 hours.

At my last full-time job, there was a Subway right next to our small parking lot. I walked down the street and over to a Jimmy Johns.

This makes sense why I loved Subway’s bread as a child but hate it now. Same with Papa John’s pizza sauce.

The older I get, the less I can tolerate sugar in savory foods and in general.

An old job had a Subway in the first floor of the building. I ate way too many $5 foot longs. Unlike Jared, I didn’t lose weight.
