When Trump said our numbers were "incredible," he never elaborated. But he did suggest they were incredibly good harbingers of The Transition to Greatness.
But sure. Let's vote for him because, as the sign outside the Catholic church in my neighborhood says, "Vote For Life." That sign depicts a baby and nothing more.

I've generally been more optimistic than most liberals, but right now things look about as bleak as they have since March when we weren't sure what we were dealing with and people were throwing around death totals in the millions.

Everything happened exactly like we were told it would: Opening colleges was a huge mistake, restriction fatigue has set in (and while poor federal leadership definitely bears the biggest part of the blame, overzealous local leadership trying to counterbalance that also contributed), and we are seeing a rather large acceleration of cases before we even get to the Thanksgiving/Christmas double-whammy. I honestly don't think anti-maskers are our problem. It's just that we've muddled the message so much that people are scared to walk down the street without a mask but they just can't resist having all the cousins over for Grandma's 85th.

The chance for any of the vaccines to apply for an EUA by "late october" is dwindling rapidly. And at the rate we are looking to pick up cases in the winter, by time it gets here in the spring it may well be moot. The question of exactly when you can reach endemic equilibrium (don't wanna use the h*** i******* phrase, it turns conversations into total shitshows) may be answered empirically by the United States by March.

And that's the thing. As somebody pointed out a few days ago, it's not "football games" that are a problem (OMG! A contact sport during a pandemic!), but the socializing of teammates between those games.

Likewise, most businesses opening are not and were never going to be a problem. Nobody's going to superspread a virus shopping at "Bed, Bath & Beyond" for a wedding present. But they sure as hell might when they attend that wedding with 150 other people.
