SLC Tribune to end daily print publication

The Tribune will switch to from a daily product in the yard to a weekly edition delivered by mail … along with daily news reporting online, obviously.

The Tribune said the move won’t diminish its journalism, and that there are no plans to reduce the newsroom staff of about 65 due to the decision, though some employees will be redeployed. Nor will its approach to breaking news change, its board said, with reporters and editors filing stories continuously on its website.

A long-in-the-works redesign of sltrib.com is set for launch “in the coming days,” it said, with updates to mobile apps by year’s end. All, according to the board, would deliver “up-to-the-minute news, analysis, investigative reporting, revealing profiles, powerful photography and a constant flow of unique journalistic offerings.”

The weekly print edition will become a showcase for The Tribune’s best enterprise work and in-depth coverage of politics, religion, business, sports, arts and culture. Its once-weekly pages will carry stories from The New York Times, The Associated Press, and other news services, along with obituaries and other Sunday features.​

They’re ending the JOA with the Deseret News, a deal that goes back almost 7 decades, and the shared printing operation will close as the print products for both will be outsourced. The Deseret News will also be making cuts in its sales and visual editing departments. The remainder of the press operations crew will be laid off.

And one of the last, no? How many are left?

 

Doesn’t feel that way. Interestingly, the DN allegedly chopped the sports department’s U of Utah coverage team along with the other layoffs.

 

Rather than print 3x or 4x per week, it is going straight to weekly and I think that's the right move. The coupon and ad inserts can go all in that one issue. 3x or 4x print is a stopgap at best. Better to keep the web site constantly updated.

 

Just took a quick peek at their home page and it looks like typical training camp stuff there. I don't see how they can do that, publishing in the same city as the university and all.

 

I can confirm this. U of U coverage team out, three guys with probably 90-100 years combined of institutional knowledge.

 

Thinking if they're going to do a Sunday paper, it would have to be to the USPS no later than Thursday night. So, lots of breezy features and analysis across all sections in the "Sunday" paper, the nuts and bolts stories on the web.

And what about the comics? Isn't Mary Worth about to announce is she's marrying Rex Morgan, MD?

 

I know The Oregonian abandoned daily print to four times a week or some-such. Curious what the largest cities in the US without a daily paper are these days - I remember when that would make news pre-internet.

 

So fucking depressing.
