Politically, she's not wrong. The problem is not "defund police" is costing too many black people their lives. So it comes down to political expediency vs. moral imperative. The Dems have leaned on the latter quite a bit in this cycle. The problem is that it's harder to convince scared white folks who like their neighborhood cop than the poor black people who they blame for not turning out in 2016 as it is.

Defund the police is the worst name for a fantastic concept because the fear mongering Republicans could take it literally and start saying everyone is going to die. The Dems needed to call it Fund The Community or Lighten The Load. Neither is as catchy as Defund The Police but at least then Republicans have to make a different argument that is more easily quashed than "Well defund doesn't really mean defund it means we take money away ..."

A lot of Republican rube voters never understood the nuance in "defund the police." It was a terrible term to ever introduce into the lexicon because it became a rallying cry of "THEY WANT TO LET CRIME RUN RAMPANT BY TAKING AWAY POLICE FUNDING." Which wasn't true, but the message was already lost.

I get tired hearing Nancy Pelosi talk about her fundraising prowess. Since she's been in the House leadership, Dems have won 12 more seats than they have lost. (Not counting special elections between general).
But Ds need to stop letting Republican attack ads define the Democratic party message. The GOP has proven they'll just make stuff up if it suits their purpose. This wasn't a "persuasion" election anyway - it was all about turnout.

"Defund police" is such a spectacularly shitty tagline for it.

Emphasize how you can reshape community response to have qualified mental health professionals and social workers deal with shit and let the police worry about real crimes. Come up with a catchy slogan.

I do think "defund the police" is bad branding. I also think no matter what you called it, it would be portrayed as THEY WANT TO LET CRIME RUN RAMPANT BY TAKING AWAY POLICE FUNDING."
