    My mom got messages from friends in Germany and New Zealand yesterday congratulating us. People definitely were paying attention.

    The polls in the U.S. do not close until 11 p.m. EST. If the election is called at midnight on election day, or at 2 a.m. the morning after in the U.S., it's morning in Europe. They're not asleep. Those immediate congrats were a direct repudiation of Trump.

    Something I've never truly understood: I moved to North Idaho in 2009. A "socialist" president who — gasp! — also happened to be a black man had just been elected.

    Yet although there were tea party rallies and various quasi-racist outcries, the years 2009-2016 produced a tiny fraction of the angst the local die-hards felt from 2017 through today. With, for part of that period, their man in power and both houses of Congress controlled by Republicans.

    If you can't enjoy the times when your ideas (and idols) are successful, you might need some new ideas and idols. Or at least a new cable news channel.
