A few years before becoming the iconic, mustachioed, brawling catcher and captain of the most famous franchise in sports, Thurman Munson is a mere rookie with the New York Yankees.
Actually, he is better than anyone else in his first full season in 1970 and is named the American League's rookie of the year 50 years ago today.

Munson earns 23 of 24 first-place votes with the other vote going to Cleveland outfielder Roy Foster.

Foster, though, quickly regresses as a player and is out of the major leagues before the start of the 1973 season, the same season Munson makes the second of his seven All-Star Game appearances from 1971-78.

Munson surely would end up making even more appearances in those midsummer games, but he dies in 1979 – less than two months after his 32nd birthday – in a private plane crash near his home in Canton, Ohio.

Over parts of 21 major-league seasons, all with Louisville and the Pirates, Wagner batted .328/.391/.467 (151 OPS+) with 3,420 hits; 895 combined doubles and triples (!); and 723 stolen bases. His career WAR of 130.9 ranks seventh all-time among position players. Wagner's entire career was pre-integration, which means we must discount his accomplishments since he played against an artificially limited pool of competitors. In any context, though, he stands as one of the best ever to sharpen his spikes. ​

Burns’ Baseball is on, perpetually? So love watching the Pre WWII episodes. Charles Comiskey should be thrown out of the HOF.

 

He was embedded with the team and missed the biggest cheating scandal of the modem era. It's a journalistic disgrace and too late for apologies.
