Six classes; I believe it's the third year of that since it rose from four.

There are 12 districts in the state, with wild variances in number of large schools vs. number of small schools. There are some districts that don't have any 5A or 6A schools. Thus, not all districts are created equal in states.

Most districts have a tournament. There are a few which combine into a sub-regional if there aren't enough schools that size in the area to otherwise have a tournament.

Essentially, every school entering districts enters the state bracket. Where they come out into inter-district play varies. An example is the 1-A bracket, where some district champs move directly into the state semis.

The public/parochial issue is quickly coming to a head here, and there might be some significant changes upcoming by next year.

It ends with three days of painful football on the frozen tundra of Hersheypark Stadium.

Recruiting and poaching is so rampant among virtually all the public schools in Michigan, the private/parochial intramural warfare has died off to a large extent.

A few charter schools have popped up and made quick splashes (especially in basketball, often powered by one great star) but many have disappeared as quickly as they arrived.

One factor in that is, with the expansion of the playoffs to 8 divisions (25
years or so ago), each championship is devalued, and presumably less worthy of cheating to win.

Also in basketball, the state's top-flight D1 prospects -- the guys who in years past would have been top Mr. Basketball contenders-- are increasingly bolting the state to play at high power prep schools.

Are those normal 8-man scores in your part of the world?
We had a 70-52 semifinal a couple of weeks ago, but for the most part teams seem to have figured out how to play the 8-man game over the last 10 years or so and scores have normalized. The two 8-man championship games were 46-34 and 58-26.
Like one coach told me recently when talking about his school's decision to switch from 11- to 8-man, "They've figured out how to play defense."

Eight man semis here today. This is a surprising score.

16-14. (The other one was 46-6)

All seven finals are supposed to be played next week at one site, in Pueblo. At like 10 p.m. on Thanksgiving Eve, the state health department said no fans allowed, after previously allowing 1,400.

Parents are pissed. Mostly because band and cheer are allowed.

Lots of push to move the games to the higher seeds where fans are allowed. The two best teams in the upper division are meeting in the 5A final. Yeah, it makes sense to send two Denver-area teams all the way down to Pueblo to play in an empty stadium. But the state association is a clown show, so that's what will happen.

It's too bad. Both teams are great and should be playing at the Broncos stadium with a huge crowd.

They allowed 500 total in yesterday.
We're doing no fans in basketball from Dec 1-Jan 28.
People are mad, but they know that the only other option was to scrap the season.

They have figured out how to play defense a little bit. This was the exception, because both teams had very very good offenses.
Team that lost yesterday was involved in an All-timer a year or two ago. Playoff game that was 60-60...........at the half.
    They ended up winning 88-66.

this is the third tome Valor and Cherry Creek have played for the championship, no? What was the attendance for the previous games. My memories of Colorado from a long tome ago were that the championship game might draw 10,000.

Yup, third time. With two other semifinal meetings.

    2018 final: Valor 24-14
    2014: Creek 25-24

    2016 semis: Valor 10-7
2015 semis: Valor 20-10 (I worked this game)

This game will be incredible. I've never seen a Creek team this loaded. And Valor goes at warp speed. Won't be the same with McCaffrey not coaching Valor (he and Logan were the Broncos radio broadcast team for a few years), but that's a good thing, IMO.

The games at Mile High are a doubleheader, for the 4A and 5A finals. Typically, they combine for 15,000 to 20,000. Would have had about the same with the 4A and 5A matchups this year.

In the COVID-19 pandemic football in Va is slaetd to begin in Feb. 22 with 7 weeks to play 6 contests. Regional playoffs will be 2 weeks instead of the typical 3 weeks and state playoffs will continue to be 2 weeks. With school divisions already opting out of a truncated basketball season look for more not to play football if the virus continues to spike. Right now in Va spectators are limited to 25 per contest.
