Manuel's Tavern in peril

Hello! First time in the forum. Wife of former AJC sportswriter Jack Wilkinson. Posting to let everyone know that Manuel's Tavern is planning to close permanently at year end. The tavern has struggled since the pandemic started and can't cover insurance and liquor license fees along with payroll. November and December should have been the tavern's best months, given the election and holiday parties, but November's haul was $75K (it's usually more than $300K).

Sportswriters who have been in Atlanta know the tavern well. There's a Go Fund Me page (Save Manuel's Tavern) that's raised $55K in 15 hours if you feel motivated to donate.

    Thanks!

Spent much time at Manuel's while I was in college and shortly afterward. Lot of steak fries and pitchers of beer consumed.

Thanks for this and please give Jack my regards. One of my favorites among the many people I met along the trail in this crazy business. Haven't seen him in years. Hell, the last time may have been at Manuel's.

Will do, but who is this? Jack has Alzheimer's now. His long-term memory is pretty good, but his short-term memory not so much.

Aw no, I hate to hear that.

Mike Harris, former sports writer/sports editor at the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Many, many stops since then but that's where I knew him and I'm pretty sure I was still there last time I saw him.

Jack is the daily double - great guy who was great at his job.

Jack remembers you! Says you did meet him at Manuel's. Thought maybe you were in town covering a football game. ("But," he said, "it could have been baseball. Maybe basketball." ;D

I was in Atlanta a lot. We had the Braves' AAA team in Richmond and, back when papers had money, we went frequently to do stories on former Richmond Braves. I also covered the 1996 Olympics, a number of auto races and football/basketball at Georgia Tech or Georgia State. So who knows but, yeah, many nights ended at Manuel's.

Just browsing around on there, that is exactly what I'm going to own at some point.
A bar that serves good food and that is not too uppity that anyone from sports writers to salesman to carpet layers can go in for a burger and a beer.
    That's the one.
