Someone several days ago wondered how the rest of the world looks at America right now, and I've been hard-pressed to prepare a cogent response.

After all, we are the grand American experiment -- just a bit under 250 years old -- or pretty damn young compared to our European and Asian counterparts. With the exception of our Civil War, we've been pretty successful at self-governing ... until now.

And just like teenagers, we're a boastful lot. Brash. Loud. A lot full of ourselves, and really unwilling to listen to anyone else's opinion. At the same time, there's a lot of envy. We may not invent everything, but we sure do know how to make it bigger and better. Thomas Edison. Wilbur Wright. Henry Ford. Hollywood. Robert Jarvik. Steve Jobs. Bill Gates. The language of science, of business, of aviation, of computers -- just happens to be in English, mainly because of our annoyance with learning something else. Metric system? Celsius? We're just fine with a yardstick, thank you very much.

Europe in particular has had their Stalin, their Hitler, their Napoleon. They've fought wars for centuries on their own land while America has gazed at its own navel, showed up late for the party twice in the past 100 years but bragged about how it survived Pearl Harbor, Iwo Jima and D-Day. The "sleeping giant," as Yamamoto coined us, awakened and dominated the second half of the 20th Century, mainly because the rest of the world was in ruins and America had plenty of manpower and manufacturing to spare.

For mainly worse, we decided at some point to be the world's police force: Korea, Cuba, Vietnam, Iran, Grenada, Iraq, Afgahistan. When you outspend the rest of the world combined in defense, you might as well use those tanks, aircraft carriers and missile launchers for something. That's certainly not won us any additional friends, particularly when we've gone rogue.

So I'm certain there's a lot of "told you so" as a tinpot despot and his gang of Keystone Kops tries to imitate a Banana Republic in front of our very eyes. The things that make us the envy of the world are biting us in the butt, and the people tired of hearing how great we are probably are enjoying our black eye.

Our system has multiple redundancies to keep someone from doing what Trump is trying to do. But the worst-case scenario could wipe out the U.S. dollar, the world's largest stock market, the world's largest military and throws the Constitution into the garbage can.

Republicans are willing to let the charade happen, because they're profiting off the deal and going against the madman and his simpletons will cost them their livelihood. But they're playing with a lit match in a fireworks store and if we go boom, they will be the last ones to know how to put it back together.
