I actually did write about it in June 2018. In October 2018 is when I got the story confirmation from Duran's friend and former sparring partner, it was at a boxing luncheon fundraiser for retired boxers who need financial assistance. Duran was there too, his old friend lives in NYC and came to see Duran again, he said they had not been together in many years. The friend told me the amount Duran was paid was $15m directly to his bank in Panama.

You're reading something into it that's not there.

 

I don't see how Duran and Leonard becoming friends is a big deal, the I Am Duran doc mentions this. Schmeling and Louis became friends and Max paid for part of the Brown Bombers funeral. Emile Griffith and Nino Benvenuti had a great three-fight rivalry, Griffith was a Godfather to one of Benvenuti's sons. There are probably plenty of other examples.

 

Arturo Gatti and Micky Ward is another example. If those fights weren't on the level, none of them are.

 

Somebody might have been smiling after losing one of those fights.

 

So you wrote about before you got confirmation? Solid journalism.

Who will confess of a fix? It doesn't happen. Fixing a fight could result in jail or lawsuits or worse from scorned gamblers.

 

I can only imagine.

 

Some guy in a Duran jacket told you his man went in the tank in the Leonard rematch for $15 million. Duran must have confessed that to someone, I wonder what Don King thought of that, until he got his cut of course.
