Or let's pray the virus away. A prominent person on the payroll of one of our 50 states said in the spring that God would make this thing go away just as quickly as He brought into existence. This person, who has no medical training, also said he had no doubt that football would be normal come September -- with full stadiums and full schedules. Any and all of those who said otherwise were just negative people.

The science is under debate about one-dose vs. two-dose. What I don't believe is open to debate is that if people perceive they're being given a less effective version of the vaccine, many of 'em won't take it at all.

DeSantis' actual quote: "I’m not sure that Pfizer would agree or FDA would agree, but I think just the point is, getting that first does out really does make a difference, and I think you’ll see that."

Maybe not, but I'd be willing to bet that DeSantis and his family all take two doses, "because that's what they recommend". Getting the first doses into people will indeed help, but there is absolutely no reason that everyone shouldn't get both the first shot and the booster. There are solid medical reasons that immunizations are done in that manner.

This is dumb. It really is. I think in systems, you seem to think in whatever pietistic, semi-religious worldview that produces that fragment of a sentence. We look at things differently. That's it, that's all.

I didn't make of a villain of them. I suggested they've taken advantage of this moment. They're not above reproach.

How is not wanting to die taking advantage of this moment?

Telling people they only need one dose...

He's wrong. And you want to know why he's wrong? Because people are utterly predictable. And if they think they have less of a chance to get sick by getting one shot, they will never go back and get the second shot, especially if the side effects are as bad as being reported. Then what that leaves us with is less protection overall. Therefore he is wrong because he is putting public health at risk, which he has become very good at over the last nine months.

But in so doing, he was suggesting that such rationing might be good public policy and an acceptable risk. It's way, way too early to determine that any state -- particularly one like Florida with its large elderly population -- should consider abandoning the guidelines of actual experts.
If I have cancer, getting half a course of chemo may "make a difference" relative to doing nothing, depending on the type and aggression of the cancer. But it wouldn't be particularly wise.
The vaccination process has barely begun. Suggesting a radical departure from guidelines and abdication in the fight sends a terrible message.
