Oscar, I was shunned in Mississippi the moment I casually mentioned I was Roman Catholic. It's all good. The Babtists are gonna Babtist.

Everybody worships something, but imagine a life so sad you choose an old mental deficient washout reality TV 'star' as the object of yours.

Here's the thing I dislike the most, because I truly believe in freedom of religion and respect everyone's right, the Christianity I was taught was there was the added tenet "it is our duty to proselytize and tell people they NEED to find Christ". That is so arrogant IMHO. It goes beyond simply respecting everyone's own thoughts and tells others they are wrong and you know better. Maybe that's just the way I was taught but it was another sticking point.

qtlaw, if I'm not mistaken it is an active part of the ministry for Jehovah's Witnesses and such to go door to door.

I find religion so deeply personal I don't wish to discuss it at all, let alone push my beliefs on anyone else. It makes me squirm to watch someone else make it part of their public self.

I don't mean to paint a broad brush or generalize, I'm just speaking from my experiences (my cousin and husband, who are devout but not born again, tried very hard for a span of years to bring my wife and kids into the "light", they gave Christian toys for Christmas to our kids and Christian books and leaflets, then tried to convert my wife at the dinner table, after politely ignoring them, we both finally told them "enough, please respect our choice"; also just going from what the churches I attended preached to us).

Indeed. That didn't happen in the old America. Certain subjects were observed as being off limits in polite company. Namely religion, politics and sex. Now we get all of them.

I have been proselytized and took the bait one time, as a young man. I attended a few scripture sessions and stopped going. I'm sorry to say it just didn't hold my interest. I was 19.

An earnest question for the faithful- is God getting us through this shared experience, the largest such in world history?

No no no. Jesus rode a T-Rex, carried an AR-15 and wore an American flag. It was in all the papers.

It is part of the great commission, yes. It’s in the Bible, and prominently so.

there’s a winsome way of doing it that doesn’t humiliate other people, hopefully.

there’s also a directive not to get dragged down by insincere scoffers.

God is the only one keeping it from being an all-consuming fire. If we’re talking brass tacks.
