    That's not new.
Neither the AD nor the coach has covered himself in glory lately. Fuente flirted with Baylor. Now the AD goes on a Twitter rant, referring to "social media mobs" and suggesting -- accurately but unwisely -- that most members of said mob aren't particularly important financially. That wound up costing him some cash; he felt obligated to fork over his own cash to the annual fund in the name of appeasing those he had offended.
And if the fan base thinks they'll get a big name when it does inevitably claim Fuente's head, it'll likely be disappointed. The populace will have to tolerate a relatively unheralded coach and see what happens.
Even Clemson, which had an 80,000-seat stadium and a national title to its name, wound up settling for a promoted wide receivers coach. That turned out OK.

Looks like Kevin Steele is the front runner at Auburn. He's tight with the good old boy money men there, and now there are whispers wondering if Steele had a hand in Gus getting sacked. Word is that Jeff Lebby, OC at Ole Miss, has the inside track for AU's OC if Steele gets the job. Lebby was previously QB coach and then OC at UCF before being hired by Lane Kiffen.

    We'll see. AU's coaching hires are always a cluster. It's a tradition.

If I were every other SEC coach, I’d be using that in my recruiting pitch. “See that guy? He backstabbed his boss, and he’ll backstab you.”

I'm amazed Steele is a top candidate for a big-time SEC school. Every time I hear his name, I think of two things: That loss to UNLV where he should have taken a knee but instead had his team fumble the ball away for a long TD return, and that time that Kevin Greene wanted to take his head off on the sideline when both were with the Carolina Panthers.

That UNLV play was amazing (not necessarily in a good way) to watch from the press box. But I did hear a story -- true? I dunno -- that Steele took the blame for the play even though he had called for the QB to kneel and the guys in the huddle decided to do something different.

When Illinois is paying its football coach $4.2 million a year... zoinks.

USC should probably go in a new direction too.
