Mariota benefited last night from coming in against a defense that was prepared for a different style of QB.

 

They have 7 picks in the top 100, and you are out to lunch if you think the QB’s you have mentioned were given a once in a generation tag. And the Jets would get a massive haul for Lawrence, why do you say they wouldn’t?

Of all those QBs cited by Dan Oregon, only Luck was regarded as a can't miss superstar prior to the draft. Murray, Cam and Baker in particular were seen as risky number one picks. Darnold was projected as a solid pro by many, which isn't the same thing. Tua was a huge risk because of injuries. Burrow was a one-year wonder, Herbert a product of a system, Mahomes as just another prolific Big 12 guy, and so on.

you pull the same shit every year with QB’s, as if you want 100% certainty on them. But sure, go ahead and sign Mariotta, I’m sure that will garner the Jets the long term success they are looking for.

 

Here's my argument though - you are comparing "peak Lawrence hype" to "post-injury Tua" and QBs who have been "driven off the lot" and into the NFL and shown to have flaws after receiving similar complementary coverage in college or their early pro careers. Shoot - even Andrew Luck doesn't look that great in hindsight his career "comps" (injury or no) according to Football reference are Dak, Aaron Brooks, Jameis, Cousins and David Garrard. In his final year, his comps were Montana, Vick, Dak, Brees, McNabb, Stafford, Brunell, Brunell and Aikman. Only two HOFers and the rest were/are contemporaries with Brees an HOF lock. Hardly "once in a generation." I'm not arguing against Lawrence as a player, but I am arguing about the hype.

 

You argued they should trade the pick and sign Mariotta.

Keep Darnold, sign Mariota, sign another competent QB - the point (as the above links point out) is that it's hard to live up to the hype. "Generational talent" has become the "elite" of the this age when describing top QBs. Would the Jets be better off by just adding Lawrence or a slightly used, flaws exposed QB with more pieces around him (and a new coach of course). I argue for the latter.

 

They have 7 picks in the top 100 and the second most cap space of any team in the league. They have the ability to add around him. Which team has extended success without a good to great QB? Plus, Lawrence will be on an entry level deal, which you can’t put a value on.

 

Does "once in a generation" quarterback mean for the whole league? Because outside of Otto Graham, has there ever been such a thing? Aren't there always a bunch of guys in the elite class? Or does the term mean for an individual team. In that case, yes, Mayfield is one-in-a-generation talent for Cleveland. But that's more of a reflection of the lack of talent the Browns have had at the position for 30 years.
