As Wife of Fart says, the Vatican could solve one of about 8,000 concurrent world problems going on right now with the sale of one (1) piece of art. JUst one.

    I can't contest that.

Oh, I think I'm OK at it. Got a lot of practice.

Somebody wants to haul off and call Jesus' resurrection a fabricated lie, I'll sit for that. It's somebody going at the fabric of the thing, at the very least. Yab does a good Job's wife impression; I'm fine with that.

The run-around stuff, eh. Christianity is cosmically huge - so are other religions - and we want to quibble about whether a homeless guy who was willingly executed is the pawn in a milllennials-old patriarchal power play? C'mon. Who's got time for that? Why have time for it?

The article @Azreal posted was good. Worth a read. Big ideas in that, at least. First half better than the last half.

This is a good fit on the religion thread, I think.

Elizabeth Bruenig on capital punishment. Tremendous piece of work.

But I warn you, it's harrowing.

Obviously touched a nerve. You know, talking about the Bible and the way organized religion actually treats religion is different than talking about people who have faith and whether or not the stories are true. Religion as it is practiced on this earth is a force wielded most often against people, particularly against women. It is a source of oppression. And yes, it is a source of lies. I give you the Catholic Church and the endless butt f****** of altar boys and the endless coverups, for one. Does that mean the stories are false? I don't know. But the essence of religion is a different thing than the way organized religion runs itself. And if you can't admit that then you're not being honest. You also have to recognize and be willing to admit that the Jesus resurrection story is not the first one in religion.

I'm surprised they haven't - I'm guessing because they think the art is used to convey the message and selling it to someone who would stash it somewhere would dilute the message. Pope Francis should do it though. More than a few saints got their start being wealthy and selling everything to help the poor.

tethered too tightly to the legacy of the church. The art is seen as a fulfillment of God, and guided by the hand of God.

It's a good piece far more worthy than the headline affixed to it.

It was an OK piece and that's being generous.

If you genuinely believe that is what you are doing, your definition of telling Christianity to go fuck itself seems to be anybody who dares to question your interpretation of Christianity.

That said, I don't think you genuinely mean that at all. I could understand if you made that claim about Mngwa's posts. That doesn't mean I don't think she raises valid points, but it would be fair to say there is an element of telling Christianity to go fuck itself there.

Splendid Splinter, however, raised a valid question for which you don't have an answer. Splinter made a fair point. You are dodging it.

I would prefer an answer as to why it is acceptable to dismiss some parts of the Bible, but others must be followed without question.
