They are only because someone says they are, but in reality they aren’t because the franchise they were set for moved.

No shit. I get why it was done. That doesn't make the whole idea any less ridiculous.

It mattered to the Browns' fans, the injured party in the move. They were compensated for their injury. It may be nonsensical, but that's what they wanted. Not caring about this is perfectly rational, but getting mad at fans for acting like fans seems like an unproductive stance for a sports journalist, or anyone, really.

Not sure I get the point here.

Is someone mad at the fans?

I just think the whole idea of having the past Browns' history attached to the current Browns rather than the Ravens is, to use your word, nonsensical.

Another poster suggested that the Jets should target Mariota as their franchise qb.
I have no idea how good he is. He looked pretty good to me Thursday night.

I only know that there is a strong argument that Peterman is the worst qb of the last decade - and Mariota was behind him at various times this year.

Well, I guess you had to be there. Maybe you were and are just being obstinate. It mattered a lot to the fans and still does. There are other instances - the state of Minnesota has a law that if the Twins ever leave out-of-state the name, trophies and records stay behind.
One of the great outcomes of the move was the league footing part of the bill to build the new stadium in Cleveland while Modell went bankrupt before the league mandated that he sell his share of the team to a minority owner.

There’s really no clearly defined criteria of what makes up a franchise’s history. If Modell would have sold the franchise back to the league, paid an expansion fee, bought a new Baltimore franchise and stocked it with an expansion draft of nobody but Browns players, would that make it more sensical? Instead, a few steps were saved.

The Steelers and the Eagles actually traded franchises in the early 1940s, including players and coaches, then combined for one year during WWII. Yet I don’t believe the Eagles claim the Steelers’ 1930s history and vice versa. The Colts claim their Baltimore history, but don’t claim the Boston Yanks/New York Bulldogs/New York Yanks/Dallas Texans lineage.

There’s really no right or wrong here.

It wasn't just a deal that the Browns' history wouldn't follow the team to Baltimore.

It was a deal that Cleveland gets a new team and the history of the old one stays with the new team.

It would have been hard for the history of the Colts to stay with Baltimore when Baltimore didn't get a new team for 12 more years.

That is exactly right. It is ridiculous to pretend otherwise, especially given what they did with the Oilers/Titans.
