    Really? They retired Mattingly's number? I mean the guy was really good for a bit, but that seems a bit extreme -- especially for a team with the Yanks' history.

    They did and not longer after he retired. They also retired Howard, Munson, Rizzuto, Maris, Guidry and Billy Martin’s over the years.

    Dodgers policy is rigid, but OK by me. Make the Hall of Fame, get your number retired.
    If was kind of alarming to see the numbers of their stars of the 80s routinely handed out to scrubs.

    Just two-digit numbers now (well, with the exception of 0). Jeter's 2 and Torre's 6 were the last single-digit ones.
