Do they have a QB of the future yet? I think Bridgewater is in the category of "League's Best Backup OR Slightly Below Average Starter," so he's clearly not the answer long-term, more like a guy who wins you 8 to 10 games if everything breaks right. Given what Rivera is doing in Washington this year with another Pu Pu Platter of options at QB, I don't think he was the problem there. (There's also probably a bit of luck involved here - Newton clearly looks done from all of his accumulated injuries, and while the Panthers probably knew his play style probably wasn't conducive to a long career, they still had several nice years with him there.)

    NERD ALERT

So I'm up by about four points in a fantasy semifinal. Opponent is done. I have the Steelers defense. Obviously benching the defense because barring some sort of weird NFL stat correction, we can STOP THE COUNT on this one.

Also, there's this game, which has stuck with me forever when it comes to fantasy. It was a regular-season matchup, and I was up like two points going into Monday Night Football. With total points being a tiebreaker at the end of the season and what not, you want to accumulate as many points as possible during the regular season. I had Drew Brees going at home against Tennessee? Of course I'm playing him. Why would I bench him?

    Then this happens

Yep. We were in a league that only gave a point per 50 passing yards, no fractional scoring. So Brees ends up with no TDs, 225 yards, four INTs and a lost fumble. Does math: that's -5 points from your QB and a loss stolen firmly from the jaws of victory.

Hope the Steelers do well, but literally the only way I can lose is if I play them.

This is a bit of a tangent from our question, but I'm a bit torn regarding Rivera's work with Washington this season. The Football Team certainly improved as the season went on, but that is a 6-8 team that is in contention because the division is garbage. Giving the Steelers their first loss was impressive, but even that was aided by the weirdness and injuries that hit Pittsburgh that week. Otherwise, Washington's resume this season really isn't that impressive.

Of course it isn't. They are still bereft of talent at QB and at the skill positions, and the offensive line is a bit piecemeal. Gibson and McLaurin have been great, and the Logan Thomas emergence at tight end is one of the nice stories of the NFL this year. I covered that dude throughout his high school and college days and he was adamant he could play QB in the NFL, but it's clear he's found a nice niche at tight end and he's getting better every week.

I've seen enough of Haskins to know he isn't a viable long-term option. But for the psyche of that fan base, just getting to the playoffs will be a big deal. The defense is going to be a force for years to come, not only up front. They unearthed some nice finds in the secondary as well (Moreland, Curl). WFT needs to focus on improving that offensive line and adding some receiving pieces in the draft.
